whats the deal with linux? newb here

whats the deal with linux and these other OS's. are they better than windows? ive heard that they are not as user friendly, but dont have some of the problems that windows does. the reason i ask is that my computer likes to shut itself down for whatever reason and im thinking it has something to do with windows and the processor trying to do too many things at once even though i dont want it to. if its worth giving it a shot i will. its not a big deal to me since the only thing i really do on the computer is go online to a few different forums and occasionly surf the web. thanks for any insight into the matter.

If your computer has an intel processor and it gets too hot, the computer will shut down. This is a failsafe built into intel chips so they don't core melt (even though it stil happens sometimes) AMD's do not have this, they just burn up. As for "are there better OS's than Windows", it depends on what you are looking for in an operating system. If you don't mind tinkering around and new challenging things, then linux is perfect. If you like everything to just magically work...then break...you'll want Windows; similarily, if you want to do heavy editing of multimedia, then Macs would be the best choice. I personally like Linux the most. It (generally) has the fewest security issues and I have never had a linux crash on me. A lot of people think that Linux isn't as versatile as Windows, but it's the exact opposite. Computers come shipped with very specific Windows software...go ahead download a random Linux distro that works with your processor and see if it works; probably will. Also, there are many different thing you can download to overcome the difficulties of Linux (like AAC, MP3, DVD, and Wireless support for example) Xine and MPlayer are good video players, but MPlayer also plays AAC files (if you don't know AAC is MPEG-4 commonly referred to as MA4. It's used by itunes and song files are smaller than some other formats.) If you have a wireless card go to http://www.sourceforge.net and download the NDISwrapper to install the windows wireless driver (.inf and .sys files) There are also ways to get xmms and other players to recognize and play MP3's.

In short, if you are asking for the best OS, no one can answer that but you. You need to decide what you are looking for in an OS then go for it.
