You first need to look at how your computer is already set up. How many hard drives do you have? How are they partitioned? Will you be using an existing hard drive for Linux or will you get a new one? If you'll be using an existing partition, then you'll need to run defrag for both WinXP and Win98. WinXP's defrag isn't 100% perfect, so you may need to run it several times for it to properly defrag the partitions.

Once this is done, you'll need to determine how big each partition is (if you'll be using an existing hard drive) and how much space you want to allocate to Linux. Generally, Linux will take space from the last partition. You also need to know how much you'll want to use for Linux. If you do a default install for Mandrake/Mandriva, you'll probably want at least 3 - 5GB. Anything more then that will be useful for downloading files or any other day to day work you may do.

Once you have this done, boot from the install CD and let the installer resize your partitions. (This is where the questions above come into play). After Linux is installed, just reboot and it should present you with a list of your boot choices.

If you wish to uninstall Linux, then just login to WinXP, open a command prompt and type "fdisk /mbr". After that, reboot to make sure that Linux's boot manager is gone and then delete the partition that Linux is on.
