Connecting to Internet with DSL

I installed Fedora 5 on my computer (dedicated hard drive, no other OS running) but I am unable to establish an internet connection. I subscribe to Verizon DSL and have their Westell Model 2200 modem for my internet connection.

Each time the system boots, the connection process fails.

I have tried setting a connection with the menu options (as root user) to no avail.

Would I be better off using a router? (I have a Linksys Wireless-B router available.) Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Verizon is no help whatsoever. They only support Windows and won't even talk about Linux.

I can remove the hard drive from the system and replace my Windows XP hard drive and everything works fine.

BTW, I am using two seperate hard drives because I do not want a dual-boot system and I do not want to risk damage to my Windows system while I experiment and play!

yes, getting a router would help your situation. Linux has always had some trouble with non-cable/Non-RJ-45 Connections, Dial-up and DSL... but a router would take the dsl connection and do it for you.

I know there is a way to set GRUB (the default Fedora bootloader) to load Windows from the other harddrive, so you dont have to plug/unplug... I think you need to have the Fedora drive as primary, but then again, you can also set the option in Windows' boot.ini. I know even less about that one, though, as I refuse to mess with Windows as it is....Too touchy of an OS....A bit of Googling/forums will usually get you the answer to that pretty quick...

I installed a router

I installed a Linksys Wireless-B router but I am still not able to connect. When I boot, the connection fails. Once logged in, the icon in the upper right says that I am connected to the network and when I view the connection properties in the System/Administration/Network window, the connection is checked and says it is activated but I cannot get any website in the default Mozzilla browser.

The router works fine with the Windows system (after a real tussel with the ISP and Linksys help people!). The router is set in Bridge mode. If I enter the web address for the Linksys router I do get the Router data screen, but that is just reading the internal settings of the router.

Again, any suggestions would really be appreciated.

My System

Once the router is set up and working, you DO NOT need to "login" or "activate" the DSL connection from the computer. All you need to do is make sure that DHCP is enabled on the router and that both Windows and Linux are set to look for a DHCP server. Generally, they are by default unless you changed something. Once the OS's get an IP address from the router, you should be able to start surfing the web immediately. Generally, once you're logged in, you're ready to go.
