Harddrive question
I have a 186gb hdd in an external inclosure. It has been formatted FAT32 and partitioned (5 partitions). The problem is that Mandrake will not mount it automatically. And when mounted manualy it is in read only.
The drive is OK sinse it can be mounted with winXP. It used to be in the Mandrake computer with the same configuration. I used an ATA controller card to handle the LBA. Now Mandrake won't recognize the hdd when I put it back into the computer. What's going on with it? How can I correct it? ETC. :( |

You might want to try a low level format from the manufacturer of the hard drive and then reconfigure your system.

Performing any sort of format will cause you to lose the data on the drive. The issue I see pertains to privlages. Since you're using Mandrake, I can tell you to open the system menu, configuration, configure my computer, enter your root password at the prompt, then in the control center select mount points, you may need to scroll to it, select hard drives, and find the desired disk in the list. If it connects by way of a USB port it will be id"d as SDA, SDA1, SDA2 etc. After you have selected the drive, you can click the expert mode button at the bottom of the window, that gets you more options such as mount by ordinary user, auto mount, etc (that window has scroll bars). Part of the overall problem is since you accessed this with windows, windows has set the permissions on the drive, If the drive is used back and forth, this may be a repeat problem. I'm not sure specifically how to tell you to set the parameters, but be careful while you're in the configuration interface. It's a powerful tool, you can do exactly what you want, or you can do lots of damage. The interface will usually warn you if what you're about to do is dangerous, but it's not foolproof. Be careful in there. Save your (click "done") settings for them to take effect.
