Dual Booting Ubuntu/Windows XP

Hi, I have windows xp and I would like to add Ubuntu. I used Partition Magic 8.02 to resize my Windows Xp partition (NTFS) to 40 GB, leaving 20 GB of unpartitioned space. When I tried to install linux, it said that it couldn't recognize the free space or it wasn't a valid partition. Is there a better program to repartition my hard drive? I would like something that nondestructively repartitions, so I don't have to reinstall all my programs. Thanks for any suggestions!

Ubuntu install will automatically repartition your hard drive without affecting your Windows install. Just make sure you defrag first. It speeds up the partitioning process.
