Gnome just died.

Hey. Strange thing just happened.
Gnome came up with many error messages suddenly, all like 'wnck application has unexpectedly quit' or 'such and such has unexpectedly quit. Do you want to restart it?'. One of the things that quit was the workspace switcher.
There was a loop of these error messages, so I restarted. Upon restart, there was no desktop, and every window had no title-bar or border. All keyboard shortcuts also stopped working.
I'm not sure whether this is relevant, but it happened just when I was opening a page with my browser that had a non-roman char encoding.

Restarting doesn't solve the problem. What do you think could've happened, and what do you think is necessary to solve it?

What distro of Linux are you using? One thing you might want to try is to hit CTRL+ALT+Backspace when you're in X. Let me know if that restarts X or takes you to the command prompt. If you're at the command prompt, login (if you haven't already) and type "startx".

Another thing to check is to look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. It should contain any errors that you're encountering. If you can't makes heads or tails out of it, paste the contents of the file in a post.

Yeah, it resumes being messed up when X is started again like that.
I searched through the Xorg.0.log file, and there's no mention of anything that looks like what happened (the word error only appears once, somewhere in it, and that was apparently automatically fixed).

I'm not actually very concerned about trying to understand why this happened right now, so I'll probably uninstall gnome to try kde out. :/

Were there any lines within the log file that started with "(EE)"?

Funnily enough, no.
So, (EE) means error, right?
