Getting started with Linux Terminal
Hi, I have Fedora 4 on my PC and I just love it
But I wont 2 go further and use all the funtions that are avalible throught Terminal. I have got as far as typing in simple comands(eg vi) and other simple comands but when it comes to say, formating a HD in Linix Im stumped. Now the first item on my "Wish list" is a list of comands and their uses. Is this asking too much? Plz advise. Snody |

Hi, snody, and welcome to TSF, I think. Your second post makes people like myself sometimes wonder if I'm wasting my time on someone like yourself.
If you are asking a serious question, then here's a good list to start with. http://www.mediacollege.com/linux/co...x-command.html Be sure to also check out the shell commands, and the tutorial.

Yes, names, letters are for options. From within a shell, if you type in a command, follow it with a space, then a hyphen, then a ? mark, you'll get information regarding the use of options letters with the options to use with the command.

Looks to me you may have had an unclean shutdown that corrupted your MBR. Always logout/shutdown the system, just as you would do if it was windows. Unlike windows though, if you suffer a problem with the system, you can usually recover by logout/login. In case of problems, "Control, Alt. + Backspace will usually get you a new login, and restore the session.

I have been using my loptop 2 try out the new comands and the problem has come up when I tryed to boot up my main PC with a HD that I have loaded Fedora 4 on.
Thus, I have XP on one HD and Fedora on another I shut down XP disconnected it and booted up with the other HD (containing Fedora) as master. I know the it is a long way of doing it but I dont know enough about the system to have a duel boot.

I see, the problem may stem from the bios not detecting the drive properly at boot. I take it this occurred right after a drive swap. When it does happen, you can either reset the bios with the jumper by the battery (with the power off) or start the computer with no drive attached, shut down when the "missing operating system" message is displayed, connect the desired drive, and reboot, forcing a drive detection.
