Linux live cd works fine but installer version won't display

Well, this is a weird problem: Demudi (Debian Music Distribution) loads
fine as a live cd, but the install is unreadable... plus I got some
kernel panic notification: no synching Attempted to kill init.

I can always redo the install but the screen is whacked.

How can I look at the screen settings used by the Ubuntu Linux
that Demudi runs on and use the recover version of the
install routine to get readable video. I know it's in there, I've
had the prog running with sound and everything.

Sound is primary function of the distro.

I think your talking about the X config file

That should be in /etc/X11 and should be called either xorg.conf or xfree86-config

It also might be a varriation of those

I sure have never seen anything like it... real dark
screen and unreadable but the Live cd set up
no problem.

I can get to a terminal window and can see what I'm doing. The install routine had 3 resolutions preselected
and I selected that. So what's the next step? I have no clue. I've never seen anything like it. All the monitor settings are jacked up to no success. I can hear the
monitor click to wherever it's going but I don't
know how to get it back. Is there a way to say:
"go to 640x400"

That would be a place to start.

But the terminal window is all I have and can see.

I managed to find the X11 directory down in root which
demuid calls 'demudi' not root. xconfig was not a command. There's another defautl-screen-manager
file but that's not an executable either.

I'm going to take a peek at www.X.org and see if they
have any clues.

it's not a command, It's a config file. It has all the values that X runs off of.

type "cat filename" to display the contents and then...... I just realized that you can't cut and paste.

Why are you trying to use Demudi anyway? It looks like a real pain of a distro and I'm pretty sure any of the tools your looking for in Demudi can be found for the regular version of Debian (or Ubuntu)

I'm subscribed to the Agnula Demudi listserv and
others seem to be having good success with it. it's a specialized Ubuntu top layer for music and sound engineers
with various wave editors, the JACK program etc.

My installed version of Demudi should (ideally) be able to
access a Yamaha RP U100 audio receiver that has a
USB connection for software control of it's fuinctions.

Trouble is the Yamaha software to do these things was
written for Windows, the unit was discontinued and no
help available.

In the Linux world there should be USB standard protocols to get control of the unit again. That's my goal.

Today I'd just like come command help:

If the /etc/X11 has all the screen info for X, I'm trying to
get that Xinfo that works on the live cd to the
installed to hard drive version.

What is the command line only syntax to do this?

I'm not in a desktop and the Demudi install jumps out
of the GDM (Gnome Desktop Manager) to the command line.

The goal is to use the cp command plus X* or whatevs
to have the hard drive see the same setup info as
the Live cd. I've tried this install multiple times. The
Debian/Ubuntu routine for install displays the same way
in Demuid as I've read it described for Debian.

Well you could just boot to the live cd and copy the x config file from the folder created on the ram to the actual hd. Your harddrive should automatically mount under either the /mnt or /media folder so you can access it through that.

Whatever you do you MUST BACK UP THE X CONFIG FILE. You can do some very serious damage to your system if you don't.

than my hardware system is implied here.

Not a whole lot of information is changing hands in all this.

How to GO TO the cdrom from the hard drive at the
command line? I don't know any 'change drives'
command from the command line, only change directories.

And then do some simple things like find out what's
on the disk and where.

Well if you booted to the hd when you look at the cd you won't get what you need. The config file is generated on boot. However if you still just want to know where it is you should find it in /mnt/cdrom or /media/cdrom. Depending on the number of drives you have there may be digits following the word 'cdrom' and would read something like 'cdrom0' or 'cdrom1'. Best way to tell which is which is to go in, list the contents and back out if necessary.

While booted to the live cd you should find your hard drive under /mnt/hda or /media/hda. If this is a slave drive it may be hdb. Or for SCSI /mnt/sda or /media/sda.

However, what I do need is the code.

Are you saying that I cannot mount the Live CD from the
hd and use the cp command to get the /X11/ directory
over to the hard drive install?

Frankly I think there's something screwy with the install
cd itself.

The file your looking for does not exist on the cd

It's created when you boot to it and destroyed when you restart.

Therefore you must be in the live cd to access it.
