Suse and Wine

Hello, I'm wondering how to use Wine under Suse 9.2. I have no idea so any help would be much appreciated. All I know about Wine is that it's supposed to run Windows programs. Thanks for your help.

Wine is a good way to run windows programs in linux; but don't expect blazing speed, It is an emulator you know. What program are you trying to run, maybe there is a open source alternative.

If wine is installed then it should be in the menu
All you will need to do is to start it up and configure it.

If it is not installed go here and you will find all that you need packages and manuals,

enough to get you legally intoxicated for a few weeks.

No Suse uses Yast

I havn't really messed with it but I'm heard it's a decent package tool, but there aren't many packages avalible yet

Just had to point that out, it provides libraries to run the windows programs, and is not an emulation, although very simliar. That being said first you should download this file if you don't have wine installed: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/w...6.rpm?download
once downloaded go to a command line and run 'rpm -Uvh [thefilename]'
after installed youshould be able to use wine by locating the .exe you want to run and typing 'wine [filename.exe]'. You will find that many will not want to run "out of box" and that you will have to google the proper configuration to make it work. best solution is a free alternative to the program geared for linux.

Wow, I guess e-mail notification doesn't work. So, say I want to run Empire Earth on Linux. What is the beginning to end process? So far I haven't seen Wine on any menus whatsoever. It says its installed, but I don't see it. Is there some place I have to copy the program files from the CD before running them? Thanks for your help.

Well there are all kinds of little config things you have to edit, run and tweak and seeing as how I'm not a wine specialist I can't even tell you where to begin. This is one of the reasons I love apt and debian based distros so much. If you installed wine with apt all these little config options such as Directx and a correct registry would all be pre-configured for you. You could techinally do it your self but it's just easier to install Windows. Happy manual reading.

The version of wine it refrences is a bit old but it should suit your needs

Hi peeps, I'm new to Linux and need a LOT of help, I have Suse installed on a second drive and windows xp on the primary drive, the loader is Grub.

now everything works fine with the exception of wine, when I try to install a windows application using wine the busy cursor bounces for a few seconds then the whole system hangs, the only way to get back control is a system reboot, so can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong with wine?

It does the same with any windows application.

Well for starters 99% of the time you can't install an app with wine

It's not an emulator

However there's a chance you don't have wine fully configured or have all the little features set up

What app is it?

All apps, The system just freezes before anything even starts, even a simple app like windows notepad does not work, its not the apps thats at fault, I already know this because they all fail, I'm guessing it is to do with the wine config file, but I dont know what settings to use.

Installed it via Yast
