Installing RedHat for dual boot with XP

I have just bought a new laptop with Windows XP pre-installed.

What I would like to do is to install RedHat Linux on a new partition and be able to choose which to start when I boot the machine.

How would I go about doing this, and can you recommend partitioning software (free if possible!)

Thanks

Well the installation process is pretty straight forward... but to dual boot you have to have two partitions on your hard drive...

To check and see if you do.... *you didn't say so, so I dunno* go to
Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Computer Management -> *on the left side there is a list and choose* Disk Management

You should see a bar graph-ish thing at the bottom; where it says Disk 0 *on the left* that is your C:\ drive, and if there are two boxes there you don't need a partitioning device. If not then you do....

And the only free one I can think of is QTParted... and it comes with KNOPPIX....

Either Partition Morpher Or FDISK... Either Are Fine, But Two Warnings... First, Defragment... IT May Not be needed, but it can be deadly. windows likes to store stuff all over you drive, so if you partitions a piece with windows critical stuff on it, you could lose everything... next, before partitioning/installing, back-up you critical info, music, docs... linux installation can be tricky and i have seen people lose all their information because of it...

Thanks. I have a couple of questions:

How much space should I set aside for linux?
What is KNOPPIX?
Where can I get Partition Morpher?

Thanks again

Space-As Much As You Think Is needed. that installation of it should be about 3 - 5 gigs depending on your distro...

Knoppix-A Version Of Linux That Can Run Totally Off Of A CD.

You Can Get Partition Morpher By Going Into The Command Prompt Of Knoppix And With Root Permission, type partitionmorpher...

Partition Magic; I did it this weekend and Dual-booted Fedora Core 3.

Just remember on a swap partition, it should be equal to you memory size (256, 512, 1024, etc)

swap partitions are for the old... they were like page files in microsoft, you don't need it, it acts like temp RAM
