Mepis Ethernet issues
Hey, I finally got a desktop and so my laptop isn't my primary computer anymore. Therefore, I immediately rushed to install Mepis Linux 3.3.1 on my Inspiron 1100.
When I boot it up, it goes through network items eth0 to wlan0 and all of them failed. My computer has a Broadcom 440x 10/100 NIC. I think it might just need drivers, but I've never installed a program on Linux before, all my experience is basic tasks and maybe 10 bash commands. Someone help please? (Oh, and I'd like to know how to install Starcraft on here?)

Sorry To Say, I Don't Think Starcraft Is Supported Under linux... Just Wondering, What Are You Experiences With Linux? Also, Try this...
cd /etc/rc.d ./rc.wireless this will boot up a wireless service that should help you get on the net, then run both ifconfig and iwconfig and see if you get an IP or signel. As For Games/Gaming, You Should Know That Linux Is Much Different From Windows in that most programs for windows won't work for linux... but there is an emulator just for gamming, it's $5 for a subscription, but i can tell you it is well worth it ... Or if you want to compile it for yourself, then it's free... it's called Cedega, the link is http://www.transgaming.com/

Actually Starcraft will run on linux, I'm 100% sure of it. I believe it requires a windows emulator called WINE, but I'm not sure how to set it up. I've taken a few linux classes and have it on an old desktop at home, but total I only have about 20 hours of actually using Linux. And I don't have a wireless card or intergrated wireless. I was saying all network services failed on start up (eth0 then a few others that ended in 0 which I can't remember, then wlan0). My problem is that my ethernet card wasn't found or wasn't mounted.

I Know Wine, But Cedega Is The Old WineX, Which Was The WINE For Emulation Of Games... Also, What Type Of Card Do You Have? And You Mount Filesystems, not cards...

o.0 I just checked out Cedega then came back and checked here. Niftyfull. But, like I said, I have a Broadcom 440x 10/100 NIC. And I knew I used to have troubles mounting my CD-ROM on my old Gateway. I just assumed all devices were mounted. Guess I was wrong. Only vaguely aware of what mounting is

I've heard of MAKE and MAKE INSTALL. Tried once to use them on something I don't remember, with no success. And I don't know what you mean by compile. Only time I know what that word means is when I'm writing simple C++ progs.

Ok, I'm installing driver with rpm, but halfway through, it tells me that directory: /lib/modules/build doesn't exist. It does exist, but it's not a directory. Not sure what it is. What's the command for file info? And hhhhellp

I have a dell laptop with that same internal nic. You should just copy the bcmwl.inf and bcmwla.inf files off your install cd and then use ndiswrapper to load them.
If you think you are really going to get into linux on your laptop you should look at: http://stores.ebay.com/DataAlliance_...QQftidZ2QQtZkm that gold card is the best wifi card around and the antena is just an added bonus :) Also that card will be autodetected by 99% of the linux distros. So far I tried slackware and knoppix-std and it worked on both of them. |

My install cds and whatnot are all tucked away at home. And the drivers and app disk included with old Inspiron 1100s are faulty anyway =P. I'm installing it from the rpm (or tar if it turns out easier, that gave me the same error message) so I might as well finish it that way. Besides I'll be really depressed if after 2 years of courting linux I still haven't installed an rpm.
So the driver is trying to build in /lib/modules/2.6.10/build. Which isn't directory, but an unknown filetype. It says something about a link to /lib/modules/2.6.10.. help please?

Ok guys, I got it figured out with Mepislovers.com and the IRC channel #Mepis on irc.freenode.com <- some great guys there.
Lonewolf you done gone and screwed me all up.=P Mepis is Debian based and make and make install were unneeded. I needed to do a modprobe. Hope this will help someone in the future.

You kidding? Now I can finally download all the things I was afraid of due to viruses. I can even download viruses and read their code.
