Just installed FC3
... and I have to say I like it.
I was using SuSE 9.2, and got attached to the KDE desktop and YaST installer. Well, I just installed my first external package (NVU web designer), and it was remarkably easy. While I'm sure I'll run into some snags (right now I can't connect to my Win2k machine's shares), this is just another example of how dependable the OS community is. I did check out the live-cd version of Unbuntu (sp?) ... quick, no hardware issues, nice look. If the game community starts writing/porting the big games to linux, M$ will be in srious trouble. As it stands now, the simplicity of setting up a linux server so that M$ desktops can use it for file storage is so easy I can see the SOHO solution of choice being linux in the very near future. I'm already working on a proposal template to promote this to several independant law firms in my area. One server, storing all files, acting as a firewall and router, and providing robust backups for the cost of the hardware alone - very much budget friendly.

Core 3 is a nice piece of work for sure. Glad you like it. Rather than do the command line thing, some software installs I believe, can be done by simply finding the downloaded file in the nautilus browser, right click, select extract. Then right click the extracted file, and select "install". Bingo! The installer may give some prompts for user input, or ask for a directory to install to in some cases. But the ease of this rivals M$ in it's simplicity, when it works. I think either the Aim or Yahoo messenger, as an example, was this simple when I tried it a year or so ago. Forgive me, it's been a while. As for your server users, the "right" thing to do would be to perhaps sell them the vendor-supported version, that way your user gets automatic updates for security and bug issues. And it helps defer the cost of development and such. This is what the vendors depend most heavily on for sustenance. So users like you and I can enjoy the free stuff. The supported versions also include utilities and such that are still free to find, but you go the free way you have to hunt them down, and that means you also need to know exactly which packages you're looking for. Just my two cents.
