Linux.org has a directory of java applications. Though I don't know what you need specifically, and this should list about everything that's available. http://www.linux.org/apps/all/Develo...ools/Java.html Hope this is helpful.

What I use is vi to create the source files and the compiler in the Java SDK from http://blackdown.org/ to compile the source files.
I don't know much about TextPad, so I don't know what you can use instead of it on Linux. You could try bluefish. I haven't used it much, but I know it has syntax coloring for many languages such as Java, C, etc. I remember seeing a few IDEs listed at the url batty provided. From what I know about TextPad, it sounds like you're looking for one of these. |

Java comes bundled with Slackware so never had to bother, I suggest downloading latest and official package direct from Sun

you might also want to try finding the java SDK for linux. if you are looking for a editor with a syntex chacker, just use gedit or the standard notepad, it have a syntex checker for almost all standard languages...
