has anyone noticed Xandros is slow?
i currently run a XP/Xandros dual boot right now i am still very much interested in Slackware but i needed something to hold me over, i needed to fill my linux hunger so to speak. i am finding that not only do apps pull up slow but the browser and download times are slow as well. and this is really upsetting. right now i am downloading Ubuntu to see what all the rage is about. i think i might even download mandrake as well at some point. xandros looks really well designed. but it should be speedy considering linux is more powerful in more aspects than windows could think IMO
but i am downloading and i want to use linux for it's server and ftp hosting capabilities. can anyone tell me is mandrake linux the one you can download, is mandrake or anyother linux flavor come preset with the ability to install and maintain a ftp server and or host my own website on my own box? and also keep in mind i have a SATA 120GB drive. Slackware unfortunately does not like my SATA drive due the kernel not liking SATA.so thanks for the answers to come. and yea will see you around the forums. |

I haven't tried Xandros as it's not a free distro. I don't know if they offer a trial/free version, but I don't have the money to buy the commercial distros. Perhaps you have a process running in the background that's taking up a lot of CPU time. I know that updatedb will slow things down when it's running and it usually runs right after booting if the computer was off overnight.
Ubuntu is nice, but if you prefer KDE over Gnome, then you might want to look at Kubuntu. As for Mandrake, you can get 10.1 Community which is their free version.
