RedHat Video Issues

I am a total newbie to Linux. I have installed RedHat 9 on a Compaq PC with an ATI Raedon 7000 32MB. Monitor is a NEC Multisync LCD 1920NX

The install detects both the card and monitor correctly.

When install is complete and it goes to boot up, once the text mode stuff is over (all the green "OK" things) My LCD monitor gets the "No Signal" dialog, the power light on the monitor turns amber, and its game over.

What is the DEAL? How can I fix this? It's driving me nuts....

I've always had problems like this with Radeons but the only thing I know to do is check ATi's support site for known issues with RedHat, look for latest drivers, etc.

Chances are your video drivers are fine, but your monitor settings exceed the limits for the LCD monitor. I had the same issue when I moved on to LCD. When you get to the point where the monitor shuts down, hold the ctrl & alt keys down, then step through a couple of resolution changes with the "-" key. If you're at 1280 X 1024, for instance it will step you down to, say, 1024 X 768 for instance, pressing the "-" again gets the next one down, like 800 X 600 and so on. Be patient, each step takes a few ( probably 5 or so ) seconds to set up, if the display doesn't come up after the first "-" do again until it appears. The problem isn't so much the resolution, but the refresh rate. But you'll need to get the res. way down to get the lower rate at first. Once you're up and logged in, navigate to the hardware manager interface, on my Mandrake system for instance, I open the "configure my computer", then root PW, then click "hardware", scroll to the videocard, and click on the bar "configure". You should click where it says "custom" and you can manually set for 1280 X 1024 resolution, at 60 Hz vertical (fits most LCD's ). And you can test the configuration there too. Settings take effect with next login.
