My System

Sound Issues

OS - SuSE 9.2

Hardware - MSI KM4M-V Motherboard (MS-7061)

(from the MSI website)

Audio

-AC'97 link controller integrated in VIA VT8237.
-RealTek ALC655 6-channel audio.
-Compliance with AC'97 v2.3 spec.
-Meet PC2001 audio performance requirement.

CD Audio seems to be fine, but any digital source (mp3, avi, mpeg) just skips/loops.

My System

Well, it looked like any sound or video app.

But, I took the easy way out - after changing every setting I could, I dropped the on-board audio, disbled it in the BIOS, and installed a cheap Crystal PCI card.

SuSE loves it. All multimedia apps are working fine.

I remembered that I had a similar issue with my system - SuSE 9.0, onboard VIA audio. I had to ensure that I never updated the drivers from the base install.

MSI don't have any drivers on their site? Also, try another flavor of Linux if you feel like pressing on. I've had trouble out of one flavor and just by changing what flavor I'm using, my equipment works. I've pulled it off too many times not to be a firm believer in trying it.
