CDRom / DVD Help
I have just installed Mandrake 10.1 from the DVD, dual booted with XP Pro without a problem. I have the ECIADSL download to get my BT Voyager 100 modem working but when I launch ECIADSL the system is asking for the Mandrake DVD to be inserted into the CDRom drive and NOT the DVD drive and I can't change it and obviously it's never going to read it in there
. Is there a way of making the DVD drive default or anything else which would solve my problem?? |

Right Skie here is the low down:
double click ECIADSL, it asks INSTALL or SAVE, Click INSTALL, It asks to OK the install, Click OK, then get a window which says "gmessage - please insert the medium named "The Ultimate Linux Desktop DVD" on device [/dev/hdc]" (hdc being my CDRW) it only gives the options OK or CANCEL. I'm afraid I am totally thinking in terms of Windows and therefore looking for typical Windows work arounds, this is my first Linux install and need to get my head around it. |

It does take some time to get away from thinking in terms of Windows. If you stick with it, you'll start thinking in terms of Linux when you use Windows.
Can you give me the URL where you downloaded this utility?

I'm assuming that you downloaded the file called eciadsl-usermode-0.10-nortek-alpha.tar.bz2, uncompressed it and that you ran ./configure, make and make install, correct?

I didn't see an RPM file when I selected your modem. Copy the file onto your hard drive, into your home directory. Then open a terminal window and type the following:
su (enter the root password) rpm -i <file name here> See if this makes a difference for you. I don't see why it should be asking for your install DVD. RPM isn't smart enough to ask for additional files.

Sorry don't undestand how you do this
su (enter the root password) rpm -i <file name here> I have tried the file you found and that does the same, is there a way to sort this out without this dodgy french program??

You will do something that looks like this. Sorry, I can't associate it with "dodgy french".

A couple of other things. You don't need to type the same thing time after time on the command line. The up arrow replaces the last entry on the command line. You can them edit the contents of the line to make corrections/retries. If you get errors, post a screenshot of the terminal, so we can see what's going on. (open the Kmenu from the star on the panel, click run, type ksnapshot the screenshot interface will open. set the capture mode to "region" click new snapshot. move the mouse pointer to a corner of the terminal, hold the left button down and move diagonally to the opposite corner of the terminal. the image will be captured when the mouse button is released. Click the save button on the ksnapshot interface, select a spot in your home directory as prompted. When you post, click "manage attachments" under the text interface, browse to your saved snapshot, and don't do as I sometimes do and forget to click "upload". When the attachment is uploaded,.... I think you get it from there.

For some reason KDE isn't getting started. At the prompt type startx and see if the x window system starts for you. If not the simplest way I know of to correct it is to boot with the installation CD, and go back through the installation process, selecting the upgrade option. This will go quickly, since it's not going to add any packages. Then when you get to the summary page, you'll see a list of items, starting I think with the language. keyboard, etc. Each has a configure button, and you'll also see an indication of "configured" or "not configured". scroll down till you see "graphical interface", and select "configure". This will get you the necessary options to configure the display. "network" is also accessible in this summary area. If you're actually getting an x window console, (a shell) then x is running. Type startkde at the prompt.

Is this to mean you're up and running as desired, with the exception of the modem?
Don't give up yet, we'll keep working on the modem problem.
