networking xp\linux
Ok...the questions are just starting to rise. BP, Skie its time to earn your keep.
If I want to share files/folders from my windows box to my linux box. I'm pretty sure I have samba installed...at least the package manager says I do. I asked this in another forum (linuxquestions) and never got a solution there is a link to there so you can see what I've already done here

Do you have the computers connected through a router? ( I'm thinking you do ) Did you configure a network in windows? In the network configuration wizard you should give the windows computer a name for it to be known as in the network, and also a name for the network, even if it's as simple as "workgroup" for instance. After this is done, Samba should find the windows box as a server.

Yea they are connected through the router and I can ping them. I can even see the windows box from the linux box using the lisa daemon (which subsequently has stopped working since. The windows box is on a network called "MYGROUP" the windows box is sharing a folder and its available to everyone (which I'd like to change in the future for the sake of security)

sure do...I tried from a user other than root and it said the lisa daemon wasn't started and I couldn't start it because I didn't have root priveleges.
edit:...nevermind for some reason it seems to work now I just wonder how secure it is

wow, i've never had any problems making my linux machine see things on my windows machine.
i simply run linneighborhood on the linux box, and explore the windows machine, and mount the drive, and then i find it in the "mnt" folder. now, making windows see my linux machine isn't anywhere near as easy. i simply just do all the file moving from within the linux box.

Well it works just fine now...it didn't even ask for a user name or anything. All I did was reboot
I don't have linneighborhood I don't reckon, and they don't show up under /mnt...but rather under "lan browser" go figure ![]()

you may have to start the package manager and add linneighborhood, as it isn't normally installed unless you put a check in the "networking" box during the install.
