WOW, RedHat 5.1 that's old, did you blow the dust off the CD's... LOL, um linux is fun, but could you post you specs up for the computer you want to install linux on... so i could see how well the computer would do with linux. um... I would upgrade to FC3, it's a lot faster and better, but linux is easy to use, just have to know how to, so post again and i will help with anything you need, and remember, there's always google.com

Linux is free to download so If you got high speed download the latest iso's from linuxiso.org Redhat 9 would be a good Idea. But If your computer can handle then Fedora core 3 would be a good choice to learn linux on.

First I'd like to ask you to post your hard drive size. Second a live cd is a version of linux that boots completely off the cd. No hard drive install. If you want linux to be your default os running from a cd is probally not a good idea. Not to mention with those computer specs I doubt your cd-rom speed is very fast. Your gonna want at least 24x to run a live cd well.

To download one you need to get the ISO file. This is a cd image. You can use a software burning program like Nero or Easy CD Creator to open this file and burn it to a disk. In other words an ISO is a ready made cd that just needs to be burned.

Your options are far as space goes are pretty limited. And the cd-rom speed completely rules out a live cd. The real problem is the 40 mb of memory. Linux lives in active memory and it will be fairly difficult to load something up in such a small space.

The most stripped down version of linux I know of is Damn Small Linux
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

It's a tiny distro will all your basic needs.

I'm not a hundred precent sure it will run but if anything will this will.

Then again there's always the option of having just the command line. But I doubt you want that

That old release of Red Hat should run in a machine with a pentium processor, and as little as 32 megs of ram. I beleve your Compaq meets these requirements. The trick is, will your Compaq boot from CD? This can be an issue with laptops. BTW, you don't have anywhere's near enough ram to run a live CD. Before starting this endeavor, I'd check the Compaq website for a bios update for this machine, and I recently saw that Compaq has some level of support for Linux on their website.

This is simple, if it works. if you boot from a win98 bootdisk, or similar that has drivers for the CD rom, try typing autorun.exe at the E:\ prompt. If it works the installer will begin. If this doesn't work, you will need to make a Linux boot floppy. More on this as needed.
