WIFI in acer one zg5 ubuntu 9.04

Hello dear friends,

I bought a used acer aspire one zg5 with ubuntu 9.04 and everything is ok but the WIFI...I am a novice in Linux but I know at least something...the wired lan network works fine but the WIFI is not working at all...the front wifi light is off and not showing at all...and I do not have even the possibility to run the wifi network search or even anything on the wifi manager...

I am freaking out so I would greatly appreciate any kind off help

Hi,

First off I would like you to take a deep breath in and out. This seems to be a common problem, so we can fix it for you. I would like to see the output form the command
Code:
lspci l=L
To enter this you will need to go to Terminal. To get there go to applications -> accessories -> terminal.

Cheers!

Well this is the output

lspci l=L
Usage: lspci [<switches>]

Basic display modes:
-mm Produce machine-readable output (single -m for an obsolete format)
-t Show bus tree

Display options:
-v Be verbose (-vv for very verbose)
-k Show kernel drivers handling each device
-x Show hex-dump of the standard part of the config space
-xxx Show hex-dump of the whole config space (dangerous; root only)
-xxxx Show hex-dump of the 4096-byte extended config space (root only)
-b Bus-centric view (addresses and IRQ's as seen by the bus)
-D Always show domain numbers

Resolving of device ID's to names:
-n Show numeric ID's
-nn Show both textual and numeric ID's (names & numbers)
-q Query the PCI ID database for unknown ID's via DNS
-qq As above, but re-query locally cached entries
-Q Query the PCI ID database for all ID's via DNS

Selection of devices:
-s [[[[<domain>]:]<bus>]:][<slot>][.[<func>]] Show only devices in selected slots
-d [<vendor>]:[<device>] Show only devices with specified ID's

Other options:
-i <file> Use specified ID database instead of /usr/share/misc/pci.ids.gz
-p <file> Look up kernel modules in a given file instead of default modules.pcimap
-M Enable `bus mapping' mode (dangerous; root only)

PCI access options:
-A <method> Use the specified PCI access method (see `-A help' for a list)
-O <par>=<val> Set PCI access parameter (see `-O help' for a list)
-G Enable PCI access debugging
-H <mode> Use direct hardware access (<mode> = 1 or 2)
-F <file> Read PCI configuration dump from a given file

regards

Re: WIFI in acer one zg5 ubuntu 9.04

It's just 'lspci'. The l=L part is just to say that case matters - and it's not a one. So at a terminal, type

lspci

and post the output.

Re: WIFI in acer one zg5 ubuntu 9.04

I believe that chipset would be supported by the ath5k driver in the Linux kernel, which should be present on your system. I'd also like the output of:

Code:
ifconfig -a

uname -r

lsmod

These will let us know what interfaces your systems sees, how up to date your kernel is and if you have the correct kernel modules running.

Yes I actually instaled wicd and it just says no wireless connection...also in the preferences for the wired network the port is eth0 and on the wireless port nothing...

Re: WIFI in acer one zg5 ubuntu 9.04

Try
Code:
sudo modprobe ath5k
Look for things that are new and/or working. If the wireless device is still not working, I'd like the output from the same three commands I asked previously (preferably in code brackets).

not working, maybe I should try with an other distro - but I am afraid it could bring additional problems with other hardware drivers.

Re: WIFI in acer one zg5 ubuntu 9.04

Did you get any errors when running the modprobe command? It should have given you errors or loaded the module, which it failed to do (it's not in the lsmod output).

Code:
nesib@nesib-laptop:~$ sudo modprobe ath5k
[sudo] password for nesib:
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, it will be ignored in a future release.
nesib@nesib-laptop:~$
that was the output...I do not know what it should mean..

Re: WIFI in acer one zg5 ubuntu 9.04

Just in case it's been overlooked, there's usually a switch which enables the wireless somewhere on the lower part of teh laptop .. has it been switched on ??

How to enable the wireless networking feature
How do I enable the wireless networking feature of the netbook?

The wireless networking feature on the netbook can be enabled by moving the switch that is located on the front of the netbook to the right. Once the switch has been moved the wireless networking icon will appear on the screen indicating that it has been enabled.

Note: The switch will reset back to its original position once it has been moved, this does not indicate that the wireless has been turned off.

Re: WIFI in acer one zg5 ubuntu 9.04

Whilst it seems that it has recognised your Wireless device it also seems that no drivers have been loaded for it.

There's a topic/ thread in the Ubuntu forum that deals with this

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=902860

you might want to check it out.
