Is upgrade necessary for linux???
Hi!!!
I just wanna know if there is a need to upgrade linux distro everytime a new version is up. I believe that some distro releases new version every six months. Or i can use my installed version without upgrade for long time? Thanks!!!

Re: Is upgrade necessary for linux???
Your Linux version will work fine for as long as you run it; but upgrading to a new version of a distro can give you access to new features and may have better security.

I have to agree with Phaedrus2401. You will also get some security fixes that come with the upgrade. Can you tell us what linux distro you are using and what the version of it you have.
Cheers!

Re: Is upgrade necessary for linux???
I'm currently using Fedora 10 for storing archive file and for ftp, does update automatically upgrade the version or there is a separate install for the upgrade (to 11), i'm afraid that there will be impact on the current role of the server.
Thanks!!!

Re: Is upgrade necessary for linux???
Well, if you do mind about security, and your server permits connections from remote (not only LAN secure-connections)... you should really consider about keeping distros updated.

Re: Is upgrade necessary for linux???
Hi,
It isn't recommended that you use automatic update to update your system. There is an actual upgrade cd that you can burn so that is the safest way to upgrade. This way there is less of a chance of a library getting corrupted during the upgrade. @tokki, I am not sure what you are referring to? Fedora 10 is only one version way from the current, and if the OP is using SElinux then they will be more than secure. Cheers!

Re: Is upgrade necessary for linux???
I was telling a "general advice", about keeping distros updated if used in a "production" (or anyway important) environment.
I wasn't referring to Fedora, sorry for the misunderstanding. |
