Linux Without Grub?
Is there such a thing as a Linux kernel that doesn't use Grub? I tried Ubuntu but every time my computer shutdown by itself, I got the Error 17 message and couldn't load either operating systems. I had to restore my system because i couldn't figure out how to get rid of Grub. I love the look of Fedora but I'm not sure if I can get it to install correctly.

Re: Linux Without Grub?
Could you expand on what you mean by your computer "shutdown by itself" and what operating systems were involved? Error 17 should mean something like the partition ordering has changed.
Technically, it is not the kernel that uses GRUB. GRUB is just a bootloader. Windows has it's own bootloader. syslinux is another example of a bootloader, which happens to be what I have on my Knoppix bootable USB flash drive. There used to be one called LILO, but AFAIK no one really uses it anymore. Also, architectures other than IA32/AMD64 use different bootloaders. PowerPC has BootX (different from Apple's BootX), Quik and yaboot. Embedded systems use bootloaders such as Das U-Boot. GRUB is a fairly good bootloader. If you're having problems, it would probably be best to work through the issues than try to ditch GRUB.
