Wanting to use two operating systems. [from other OS]

I have an old HP desktop with Windows XP Media Center Ed installed. I do not have the original OS disks that came with my pc. I did download Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to get my product key. I have also backed up my personal files onto a disk, and I noted my various drivers that i may need to update after reformatting.
I am pretty new to formatting disks, partitioning disks, and installing multiple OS. Can i reinstall windows from my PC? How do i correctly partition my drives? What i really need is a good tutorial, but I haven't found one online, because none of them deals with the fact of not having a disk with the OS. Also, can I download say Ubuntu, burn it to a disk, and use that to install my 2nd OS? I have never used Linux, but I would like to test all of this out and get experience with two operating systems. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am kind of stomped on what to do next.
