[SOLVED] Can't Change Resolution in Ubuntu

Hi, recently installed Ubuntu on a new machine, however, it was a very old monitor I was using with it, so I went out and bought a new one, however, every time I try to adjust the resolution by going to Display it either freezes and doesn't let me do anything, or won't let me select a resolution above 800x400, although my monitor keeps giving me a message saying the optimal resolution is 1680x1050, is there any way I can solve this?

Thanks in advance.

Forgot to say that when I was using the old monitor, I was changing the resolution and to change it to 800x600 it said something about overwriting a virtual file, so maybe that's why I can't change it.

I've tried installing and uninstalling the ATI driver, and going to the Catalyst Control Centre to change resolution, but not had any luck yet.

Re: Can't Change Resolution in Ubuntu

Hi,

Can you tell me what version of ubuntu you are using? If you could get that error message again then that would be great, also please post the results from this command in terminal.
Code:
lspci l=L
Cheers!

Hi, thanks for the response, but I just came on to post that I was able to alter the resolution by manually editing the xorg file (which I backed up before editing) and changing it using ATI's Catalyst Control Centre to confirm the change.

Thanks again for the response, though!
