Need help with realplayer 10
Hello I am new to linux and am running Fedora core 3 release, I've tried to install realplayer 10 but I can't for the life of me figure it out. I am use to windows and dos and not that familiar with the commands in linux. I've tried numerous times to install realplayer and I hope I have not corrupted my OS by doing these failed or seemingly failed installs. Can anyone help me it would be appreciated? is there a easy way to install this? Thanks in advance David. By the way I like the OS its great.

What type of error messages are you given, if any?
Also, check the RealPlayer site, if I remember correctly they have instructions on how to install. Here's how I did it on another system... (in terminal) su in, I'm guessing you installed it to /home/username/ here, if you didn't, cd to the directory (cd /home/username/RP10instal for example will bring you to the directory) then, still in the terminal type 'rpm -ihv --force(Force since it seems you already attempted to install and failed) <installfilename>.rpm' without the quotes of course. Sorry I didn't have time to get you the RP site, I'm at school right now and the class is almost over. Keep us updated. |

Well I don't think I received any error messages, just bad command prompts, bad file name ect. Although it seemed to install once but it asked where I wanted to install it and I went with the default setting. All the files are now in my home folder. I've tried just clicking on the exe file but that doesn't work I guess thats just a windows thing. Anyway I'm kind of enjoying tinkering around with this OS its fun I like it better than windows its sooo much faster. I'll try the command you gave me wish me luck hopefully I won't give it some command to corrupt the OS thanks again David

I'm running fedora core 3 I have tried to run yum and all I get is a quick flash and thats it is there something I have to do to use it? Thanks

Since you're running FC3, you may be able to install within Konqueror or nautilus. Navigate to where the file is, right click, look for "extract" if you see that, click it. Extract may give choices as to "extract here" or "extract to" . "Extract here" is probably ok, Then rt. click the resulting extracted file, and look for "install". You likely will need root privelages to install. Also, when trying to do such an operation in a terminal, you need to open a root terminal, or you'll possibly get the errors you mentioned. Clicking the "terminal" link on an open "user" terminal should get a list, including "new root terminal" that link gets you a root password prompt, and subsequently a root terminal to work in, with full root privelages.
For help with the rpm application in a terminal, type rpm -? to see a list of available commands.
