a few more questions
Do I need a firewall for linux? I am behind a router but that will only do so much, and I am planning on running a webserver (another question for another time) and I feel I might need some added security.
I heard linux came packaged with one...how does that stand up? Is it like the windows firewall? better? or worse?

Sorry for the late reply. I don't know much ( really, anything ) when it comes to the security end of the deal. But the Linux firewall application is shorewall. Here is a link to information regarding shorewall and slackware, and installing shorewall. http://www.shorewall.net/Install.htm

I know you're kind of server-oriented with this project of yours. I saw this, and thought of you. http://nfs.sourceforge.net/ Hope it helps, without being too much too fast.

Linux should already have iptables installed which should be able to handle any firewalling needs that you may have. But it's not the easiest to configure. There are other applications out there that simplify this.
As a standalone machine, Linux doesn't really need a firewall. But, for a server, it's nice to have so you can ban IP addresses if needed. It can also help limit outside accessability if you wish. For example, say you have a mySQL server running, but you only want it accessible from your own machines. You can block the mySQL port to the outside world. The fewer services that they can access, the better your security is. BTW, I've been MIA for some time due to computer problems and being very busy. So, sorry for replying so late.
