Should i use linux?

Hello guys, I'm new to this forum hope you give me a warm welcome :D

I'm planning on buying a new computer, and I'm really looking forward in installing a Linux distro.
Mostly i want a stable, problem-free, user-friendly operating system, i want to work with photoshop, dreamweaver, office 2007, browse through internet securely and in a very comfortable way.
I also want to setup a network in my house, to use the same printer. {optional}
and maybe host a webpage {way more optional cuz im thinkin in webhostingservice but that's another story"

So is really a linux distro an option or should i go for a mac/windows7?

Re: Should i use linux?

Hi,

Welcome to TSF!!

I have to break it to you. There is no distro of linux that will run any of the programs that you have listed natively. There are a lot of alternitives to those products that run fine on linux but you will have to do a little or sometimes a lot of work to get them to run perfectly.

That being said there are a lot of good distros out there. I have used OpenSUSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, and others in the past. They are all user-friendly, and for the most part problem-free. But you won't find any OS that is problem-free completely.

Right now I want to work on getting you a distro for you computer before we work on setting up printer sharing and website hosting. They are both very doable but not until we get you started with a distro. I would recommend that you have a look at Distrowatch. This is a site that keeps track of all the current distros that you would be interested in and has some nice search features too.

If you have any questions we would be more than willing to help.

Cheers!

Ubuntu is stable enough for me. Never had a crash in well over a year--and I do a lot of stupid things with my pc. Only problem is that most of your windows software won't work on linux and those that do require a Windows Layer to be installed like WINE.

It's user friendly. It's a lot like a mac with a start menu instead of their little bar--makes me giggle.

Who needs photoshop when you have the GNU Image Manipulation Program? [GIMP]
Who needs Office when you have OpenOffice?
Who needs dreamweaver when you have KomPozer?
Who needs Outlook when you have Evolution?

You know what the best thing about all of the above mentioned programs are? They're not only free, but they're maintained very well, updated often, work just as good if not better and work with linux and windows. Most even work on Macs.

It doesn't matter to me which version you try, but if you try any version, I promise you'll be hooked for life.

If you want to try without changing anything, google ubuntu and download the free iso. Burn it to a CD and run it as a Live CD. Don't choose install or you'll lose your current partition and any work.

This allows you to check out the features of most distros of linux without committing any more than a few hours time and a blank CD-R
