Ubuntu Server Edition Question
Hi All,
Still plugging away at the Linux issue, and I have a question: It has been brought to my attention that downloading the "Live CD" format of any open-source Linux is going to be a stripped down version as compared to DVD format. With that said, I have no other option other than Live CD, so I am going to download Ubuntu Server Edition onto Live CD, and I need to know if this will come with the Server essentials installed / present on the software library, or if I am going to have to fetch everything from the internet? Also, should I be downloading 32 bit or 64 bit? The Server's are Nixsys Open Systems Servers, and they were made in 2004. I am thinking I should probably go with 32 bit. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dean |

Re: Ubuntu Server Edition Question
Hi,
Yes you are right that there is less information that is on a CD than is on a DVD. That being said you will get a base OS when you install any OS on to your computer. Following that you will have to do an update to make sure that you get all of the software and library updates that are available for your OS. As for your servers you can run a 32bit OS on a 64bit CPU, in this day and age you won't loose that much from runniing that way. The last I had seen there weren't that many benifits from the 64bit OS to go that way. That may have changed but there were some issue with crashes in the last year that I have heard about. Other than that I am not sure what else you would like to know. I am open to any question and am willing to try and find a correct answer for you. Cheers!

Re: Ubuntu Server Edition Question
wmorri,
Thanks for all that information. I guess the main thing I am really wanting to know is which way is preferable to go with installing to the 2004 Servers. 32 or 64 bit? I burned the ISO for both 32 and 64 bit. Guess I should just try 64 bit and see if it takes, and if it does, run it? |

Re: Ubuntu Server Edition Question
Hi,
I don't think that it really matters is what I guess I mean to say. I would try them both but I am sure that 32bit will run on it. I have run the server edition on servers desktops from 2000 and before so it should work fine. Cheers!

Re: Ubuntu Server Edition Question
wmorri,
Ok, I went ahead and burned the ISO image of both the 32 and 64-bit images. I am at work now and I am in the process of installing the first server. My Server's do not like 64-bit, but they are fine with 32-bit. I am now on the download/install/Remove Pkgs screen. I pressed g, and I am a bit overwhelmed (lol). I should mention I have 0% Linux experience. Anyway, I need these servers to have all of the standard things that Servers typically have installed, and for the functions, I am going to need Mail, DNS, HTTP, FTP functions installed. So this list has about 385 programs. How do I know what to install? |
