I've always have been interested with Linux but never had the chance to use it until now. Thanks in advance! |

Re: Which Distro should I use?
Hi,
I would recommend that you take a look at each of them. They all have livecds, that you can make and take a look at. I have used all of them except Mandriva, but I am a huge Fedora junky myself. That said, try them all look at their websites and go from there. The nice thing is you can install over and over again without causing any or too many problems. Cheers!

Re: Which Distro should I use?
Is there anyway I could possibly put the livecd on to a flashdrive?
Also how could I boot from a flashdrive? Also, with a live CD Do I need to format my harddrive to use it? Or will it just play from the CD constantly? Last edited by Warfare; 07-15-2009 at 11:09 AM. |

Re: Which Distro should I use?
Hi,
I would have a look at this website, as crude as it is there is some good information there. As for booting from a flash drive all you do is plug it into your computer prior to starting, then restart you computer. Jump into your bios and then choose to boot from the flash driver. Cheers!

Re: Which Distro should I use?
Are there any Distros or Linux I should not try?
ON the list or not. Also, with a live CD Do I need to format my harddrive to use it? Or will it just play from the CD constantly? Im just a noob... I read a PDF and it said to dl the ISO then make it a CD then it will be a LIVECD.. From there you can install it.. :// Last edited by Warfare; 07-18-2009 at 04:34 PM. |

Re: Which Distro should I use?
Hi,
I would try all of the distros listed. Kubuntu and Ubuntu are the same thing with different GUI's. You don't have to worry about them srewing with your hdd as they run straight off the cd. Another option that you might like is to d/l and install Vitualbox. This is similar to VMware and you can just install the ISO file on it and run two or more OS's at the same time. Cheers!

Re: Which Distro should I use?
Note: When running live CD's some functions are disabled because it doesn't use your hard drive. So saving things is pretty much not allowed... unless you mount your hard drive and save them there... maybe.

Re: Which Distro should I use?
I get it during installation.
The error says something along the lines of "Windows can not verify the tag or Logo of this program. Windows STRONGLY suggests that you DO NOT continue with the installation and contact the company that produces this program."

Re: Which Distro should I use?
I downloaded it again, and it still gives my the same warning.
Just to make sure, http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads I download the FIRST one on the list. |

Re: Which Distro should I use?
Hi,
Exactly. I am not sure what is up with this. I might just go ahead with the LiveCDs or I can kick this over to the Windows folk if you want and they can have a look at it? Cheers!

Re: Which Distro should I use?
If it's still giving you the error maybe try one of the older versions of virtualbox or even running it under windows 2000/98.
you can download version 2.2.4 of virtualbox from here As for the choice on which distro your going to use, I went with ubuntu at first and thought it wasn't too bad. Went to openSuSE on KDE and it was a bit better and then used fedora. When I hit fedora I thought it couldn't get much better then this until I used fedora + kde when fedora 11 was released :) But as for the first distro I would highly recommend that you use openSuSE as it has a simple administration tool called YaST for updating/installing/uninstalling software and also just simply changing system configuration. |

Re: Which Distro should I use?
I still get that error with an older version. Not sure. Ill try compatibility mode.
Edit-- No matter what OS I pick in compatibility mode it still gives me the error.. Could windows be wrong? Last edited by Warfare; 07-20-2009 at 11:44 AM. |

It does say to do this process when attempting to install internet explorer SP1 but I would try to do the same process but instead with virtualbox. Last edited by Milk Rulz; 07-20-2009 at 02:47 PM. |

Re: Which Distro should I use?
Because I have no Cd/DVD's right now to use to burn a iso. And I wont for a while. But I still want to go through most of the LiveCD's just to see what I like.
@Milk Rulz Thanks I will try this out and see if it works.. Im wondering if anything will actually happen if I just continue with the installation. |
