Ubuntu Jaunty stuck in login loop

I run Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) on an ASUS laptop. A few days ago I lost power, since when I cannot log in. Every attempt simply returns me to the login screen. It's not a credentials problem, as I don't get a "Login failed" message, and I can log in from a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F2) to any of my user accounts.

I have the following in my Sessions Type menu; all have the same problem: Default, GNOME, GNOME/Openbox, KDE, KDE/Openbox, Openbox Session, Secure Remote Connection, Window maker, and Failsafe.

I've run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and rebooted, and I've cleaned out both my home dir and /tmp, making sure it's not a diskspace issue (/ currently has 9.2gb free; my /home partion 4.9gb).

Here's my current xorg.conf:

Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
Since the problem happens with all user accounts and all session types, it seems it must be an Xserver issue, but I don't know where to look.
