[SOLVED] Installing Ubuntu 8.10 in Microsoft Virtual PC

Hello
When I try to install Ubuntu 8.10 into Virtual PC several things go wrong from the beginning.
1. the sites that try to give you information on this say when you highlight the OS in the Virtual PC you will get a screen like a OS loading, I get a window with command line stuff.
2. After that I can choose my language, no problem.
3. Set to safe graphics mode, again no problem.
4. Try ubuntu with no changes to your pc produces lines of code, or instructions and then this:
[ 0.172010] [c04b5bca>] check_bugs+0x7f/0x105
[ 0.172010] [c04ab93d>] start_kernel+0x303/0x37f
[ 0.172010] [c04ab3e4>] ? unknown_bootoption+0x0/0x200
[ 0.172010] [c04ab09e>] _init_begin+0x9e/0xa9
[ 0.172010] =================
[ 0.172010] ---[ end trace 4eaa2a86a8e2da22 ]---
from here the cursor line sits at the bottom left corner of the box and blinks rapidly.
If I can give anymore information that may help let me know, if not thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give.

Re: Installing Ubuntu 8.10 in Microsoft Virtual PC

Hi,

It took me a really, really, really (3.5 hours) long time to install Ubuntu 9.04 on Microsoft Virtual Machine. And there was some minor programming involved just to get it to run on the Virtual Machine. I will let you know that my screen went blank for a good 5-10 minutes at one point. I just waited it out like I read on a website and 3.5 or more hours later it was finally installed. It took about 45min to just start the installation.

I downloaded Sun Virtual Box today and installed PCLinuxOS in less than 45min. It was very quick and I didn't have to make a CD, I just booted from the ISO. I have only used the Virtual Box for about 3 hours today, but in comparison with Microsoft's Virtual Machine, Virtual Box blows them outta the water. It is so so so much faster!!!

Here's a link to the Virtual Box: http://www.virtualbox.org/

Try it out and lemme know what you think.

Re: Installing Ubuntu 8.10 in Microsoft Virtual PC

First, thanks JeKyL for the reply to my question. It would be interesting to know what you had to do to get Ubuntu 9.04 to run on a Microsoft Virtual PC, but it would be way above my head.
I downloaded the Sun VirtualBox and it seems to be running quite well. I am having some problems with it but nothing that is insurmountable. Today I set the screen resolution to the smallest it goes to see what it does, and ended up dumping that OS because, while it made the display screen smaller, it didn't make the window for making the changes smaller and I couldn't get to the change, or save button, whatever it is.
Anyway that is life.
Thanks again for the help

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Ubuntu 8.10 in Microsoft Virtual PC

Hey,

OK. I followed these instructions to get it working on Microsoft Virtual PC 2007:

http://arcanecode.com/2008/11/10/ins...rtual-pc-2007/

One thing to keep in mind.....be very very patient. These instructions gets it installed and running, but then you probably want the screen size to be bigger and ability to use the scroll button the mouse and also network help and sound. So some programming is needed, but you can locate "how-to's" on the web.

To figure the rest out do this: google what is wrong and you WILL find an answer...but it depends on what you search for as well. Just be patient and google the problem you are having.

Remember you may be sitting with a blank screen for a awhile...so be patient (3.5-4hrs patient)

If you also read the comments on the site I suggested they suggest some very helpful tidbits.
