I'm trying to setup wireless on my Ubuntu/XP dual-boot laptop. On XP it's working fine (using it as I type this!).
In Ubuntu, I set it up, detected it, connected, and got 100% signal strength. But when I try load a webpage, it just wont connect. What am I doing wrong? I've had a quick look through google results for this sort of thing, haven't found anything relevant... What would you suggest I look at as possible causes of wireless not working in Ubuntu 8.04? What are the common mistakes that a newbie like me might have made? Just any hints are welcome... thanks... Last edited by Ascyron; 07-04-2009 at 05:32 AM. |

Re: Wireless in Ubuntu...
go to System/ Preferences /Network Connections
click on wireless when the window opens click on Add then configure your wireless connection by name and access code WEP or WPA etc .. Warning .. leaving this open in your wireless router will allow anyone to use your connection to gain internet access .. it's preferable to use a WPA PSK or WPA2 password using a difficult character combination. use something like !tT0/lpTT@#$g0tcha which is quite strong and difficult to break. WEP is a very weak security measure as you will find out if you do a little bit of research. note .. Hackers use "dictionaries" of popular names words etc to try to crack WPA encryption .. don't use anything easy to remember but keep it safe in a text file somewhere on your PC or a Back up CD WEP is cracked by "sniffing" the communications between PC's and Router .. broken very quickly and very easily.

Re: Wireless in Ubuntu...
I've done all that... set it up, got it to the point where it admits its connected... it just isn't working...
I live in a pretty remote area, I don't really need to worry about hackers... when I say "remote", I mean that if you look hard enough, you can see one house in the distance. I don't think I'll be getting many nerds hiding out the back with their laptops hooking into my wifi

Re: Wireless in Ubuntu...
funny thing is that out in the wilderness the record for wifi connectivity is way beyond what you think
Quote:
If you have done everything above, that has been suggested, the only thing that comes to mind is some sort of incorrect setting on your router .. perhaps it hasn't connected to your gateway address or is on the wrong network. can you ping the network gateway ???
