add a new user?
I've had to log on using root and passworrd, but when I logon as this my homw screen has no start button or My computer or anything like this. I'm just wondering if I create a new user to login as will my start option ect come back? If so how do I add a new user?

When you installed linux, did you setup a regular user account at all? If so, is there a reason that account can't be used? That's usually how it works as it's a very bad idea to login as root to an active xsession. You can do a lot of damage that way without even thinking about it.
If that's not the case, just post back and we can go from there.

Yes when I dowloaded linux initially I created an account, but something happened and it wouldn't let me login (it was an error message) , so I called linux and they told me to login as root with my password and use that. I've tryed to login as the user name I originally created and it says that the username and password are invalid
