Linux as an alternative OS
I have recently acquired a new laptop with a Vista OS. I find it much less user friendly than XP. Is it possible for a moderately qualified person to download a Linux OS to use as an alternatve to Vista?

Re: Linux as an alternative OS
hi,
I had major problems with Vista, so much so to the point where I was going to try and downgrade to XP, after a while thinking about windows and MS as a company I realised that a Linux OS was the way to go. So after doing some research I chose Ubuntu as my new OS, once I installed it (along the way removing all traces of Vista) I have found it vastly superior to any MS product. You have to get used to the way it works as it is different from Windows, but I have found it quicker to boot up and shut down, the apps that come with it work really well, it is very user friendly and it is upgraded every six months. I would say have a good look around to see what OS you want before downloading and installing, my advice would be go for Ubuntu. Regards Andy

Re: Linux as an alternative OS
I would have a look at DistroWatch, to find out about different Linux Distributions.

Re: Linux as an alternative OS
I use Ubuntu on my Linux workstation, mainly just for programming for web development and moving into software engineering for college, which I start my degree in, this September. I find Linux to be very stable and provides many of the software alternatives to leading MS office products and even programming software. I love the Bluefish editor for web programming. I also have Adobe Fireworks CS3 installed via the WINE application to run Windows based software on your linux system. All works pretty nice. Ubuntu is a great start, but so is Fedora and SUSE.
