Under windows it seems possible that the touchpad is a "virtual mouse" since there is no hardware itemised for it but there is a non existent PS/2 Microsoft Mouse

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

The issue here is that the touchpad doesn't work apart from the buttons in 9.04 whereas in older versions the touchpad does function.

I am wondering what I need to install.

I went into various internet searches to try and identify the missing drivers but it seems that I found nothing. From within the Windows OS I only see a non-existent Microsoft PS/2 Mouse in the Device Manager and no Touchpad device mentioned anywhere. That gave me the idea that it's a "Virtual Mouse" ie a device that is made to look like something else.

Since it was recognised in 8.04 what am I missing in 9.04 that would make it work?

The laptop is a Twinhead 12D badged as a Philips Freevent X50 (F12DT) but it's also seen as a Averatec AV3715.

I am having issues re-installing XP Home since the old harddrive was corrupted and parts of the Recovery Partition lost. I thought a good workaround might be Ubuntu since it will only be used for web surfing and little else however I have come across these minor problems when trying out the latest Ubuntu Live CD's.

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

Done, you can't make this easy for me. I will see what I can do with this, but if you are having problems with XP then I am not sure if I can get a good answer for you. I will see if there is anything out there though.

I seem to have found a bug report that has a lengthy solution I don't know if you have taken a look at it or not, here it is.

Cheers!

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

Hi wmorri, sorry for being a pain. It seems so silly and yet should be so easy, most likely a driver that should have been loaded but isn't because 9.04 isn't seeing a "mouse" at a "ps/2" port whereas bot Windows & 8.04 do!!

XP is working and functional apart from silly random beeping, possibly heat sensor alarm. I am not asking you to foix that for me

I want to give an alternative OS to the user in a dual boot system but the touchpad doesn't function in the version (9.04) I want to use. In an older version (8.04) it does.

I suppose I should pop down to the Ubuntu forums and ask there but I'll see if I can fix it at TSF first.

edit .. changed my mind and I am using the two prong approach. On the Ubunbtu forum I searched and found no touchpad info so i placed my question there too!
will naturally report back here if I find anything. I suspect that it must be a bug, since the older live cd's find the touchpad

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

Hi,

I understand totally, you aren't being a problem at all. I was just trying to pick on you a little bit. Did you happen to take a look at the link that I posted. I don't know if would be of any help to you but it was the only thing that I could find.

I wouldn't count too much on the Ubuntu forums. I have asked questions there before things that should be an easy fix and I get like two replys and then nothing. But best of luck on that.

Cheers!

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

Thanks for that link , I haven't tried it yet busy re-installing Windows (again!!)

I tried installing 8.10 but as I remembered it was buggy at install, 8.04 install gave me a few problems, probably because I tried to install to an ext3 partition, went smoothly with an ext2 partition but for some reason no grub at restart. I must have missed something like where the grub got installed. Since the last Windows install didn't go well ( I was left at the window .. Windows can be shut down now!) I decided to re-install XP Home before trying to re-install Ubuntu.
However that workaround may look good until it means that every time the user boots he will have to tun a script to make the touchpad work. Having said that, you found more than I did and Thanks for that. The Ubuntu forum seems to have gone offline for the last few hours so trying to dig deeper has also stopped.

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

Thanks for that link ..

I found this
Quote:
sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps
works from a terminal window

however it also says
Quote:

To get this to work on startup you just need to run the following command:

echo "options psmouse proto=imps" |sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse

It's not a fix, but it's a good workaround.
I tried that by adding it to the line when hitting F6 (other modes) on the live CD menu, but got a message that it's not recognised.
It looks like something that might be added as an option to the CD menu. Any ideas and can it be integrated somewhere so that it works automatically at every boot should I install to Hard Disk? or woiuld I need to add that somehow into the kernel ??

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

Hi,

I did a little looking and you might be able to add it to the modprobe.d file. That can be found in the /etc/modprobe.d/. You should have a modprobe.conf.dist or a file similar to that which you can add things too. This might help you a little too.

Cheers!

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

Thanks a bunch .. I'll see if I can get this old tired brain of mine to grasp the intricacies. At least i now know what
Quote:
echo "options psmouse proto=imps" |sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse
was referring to now .. even if I don't understand it! YET!!

Let me see if I can break this down for you. I will start with "echo" that is a term in programming like php which means to write what is in quotes. I don't think that I need to explain "sudo". "tee" is a tool that reads from a what is written from in this case "echo" and then writes it to a file, the "-a" shows that the files is to appended but not overwritten.

I hope that makes sense to you. If not just tell me and I will try and explain it a little differently. If you want exact answers look in the MAN pages in terminal.

Cheers!

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

Thanks for the explanation .. I will call you if I have problems. I;ll be looking into it with an idea to incorporate it into a build I am planning

in the meantime there is a 9.10 Karmic Alpha 2 version apparently that has had this bug sorted. However it seems it's early yet and is still in testing / bug fixing stages. An alpha 3 version is expected with most bugs fixed.

Re: Ubuntu laptop Touchpad problems

looks like I have this under control now

I created a file using gedit called psmouse and saved it to /etc/modprobe.d

contents of psmouse

Quote:
options psmouse proto=imps
In case of any upgrade though I would like to safeguard this setting .. will any upgrade affect those modeprob.d files ??

do I need to add it to the menu.lst with a kopt header, perhasp

Quote:
##kopt options psmouse proto=imps
