new to ubuntu

Hi I have a Gateway ML6226B laptop, with Vista Home Basic, 32 Bit, SP1, 512MB of RAM, Intel Celeron M CPU 520 @1.60GHZ.

Having lots of problems with vista as the laptop is not up to running visita, so I would like to try a different OS. How do I install ubuntu? Do I have to uninstall vista? If so how? And is there any thing else I should know before installing and running ubuntu?

Many thanks

Re: new to ubuntu

You only need to uninstall Vista if you don't want it on your computer. This should help you understand the Ubuntu installation process.

Hi,

I am not sure what you mean by 'issues with vista and Ubuntu'. Do you mean if you run them together in a dualboot? Or... I am not sure how to answer that question.

Cheers!

Re: new to ubuntu

Hi,

I would recommend that you have a look at Linux install guide. This should help you with installing ubuntu.

When you get to the point of choosing how much of the hdd you want. This is when you need to choose between install only on the space left on your hdd or choosing to install on the entire hdd. But if you need help with it just post back and we can help you with it.

Cheers!

Re: new to ubuntu

I am dual booting Vista and Ubuntu, the only reason Vista is still on my box is for the very few programs that have to have it. No issues.

Re: new to ubuntu

Having problems installing ubuntu. I downloaded the file, checked it as per instructions on the website, downloaded the iso recorder as per instructions from the website. Copied the iso onto a DVD, went to install as per instructions from wmorri and it did not install. It gave me the option to chose language, which I could do but at the next screen when I had to chose install option I could highlight the one I wanted but when I pressed enter nothing happened. Where do I go from here? I did not back up vista as I have nothing worth saving as I have already have it stored eleswhere. Should I remove vista? before installing? If so how do I do that? Or should I have copied the image onto a CD instead?

Re: new to ubuntu

Hi,

I might try a cd. When you go to burn the image choose the lowest speed possible like 2x or 4x. Then see if you have problems with the install.

Cheers!

No you don't need to do that. I would still try a cd sometimes it makes a difference.

Re: new to ubuntu

well I got it installed, I had to use a CD instead of a DVD. When I came to partioning the HD the only way I could get it to install was by removing Vista!!!!. Oh well I was having problems with that OS anyway. So what AV, Firewall and Spyware programs can I use with it?

Re: new to ubuntu

Hi,

Great to see that you were able to get in installed. Sorry you had to loos Vista but Vista isn't really a great OS anyway.

About AV, firewall and Spyware. For AV you can use a program call ClamAV you should be able to find it in Synaptic Package manager or by installing it from command but I don't know how familiar you are with that yet.

For a firewall there is a program called iptables which is the preinstalled firewall, it works very well but if you aren't used to it then it can be confusing. If you want a gui program the I would install Firestarter. It is a very clean and helpful front-end for iptables.

For Spyware I would be so worried about that. There isn't a lot of spyware out there for linux. So that shouldn't be a big deal.

If you have any other question just ask and I will find an answer for you.

Cheers!

Re: new to ubuntu

Hi,

Unsure where to look for the firewall and AV, I am so used to Vista so finding myself around the new OS is a bit hard. The transmission bit torrent client how does it work? Are there programs for disk defrag? and disk clean up? If they are preinstalled where do I find them? As for updates for Ubuntu how often are they released?

Many thanks

Re: new to ubuntu

Hi,

If you read my post you will see that I have a link for firestarter in there. If you need help with ubuntu go to the Ubuntu Community Help site.

Transmission works the same as any other bit torrent that you have ever used, but I can't go into detail about that. Check the rules for more info.

Cheers!
