Some Modifications...
What are some safe tweaks that I can use under Ubuntu, short of compiling my own kernel (which I have never done.) I have a Sager NP8660 laptop with a P8600 processor and a 9800m GT. I figure I'm not getting the full potential out of my Ubuntu install right off the bat.

Re: Some Modifications...
Hi,
There are an infinate amount of things that you can do for tweaks what are you wanting to do, I guess that is really the question. As for compiling your own kernel there are a lot of steps that go into that. I haven't done that myself so I don't all of them. One thing that I would ask though is do you know how to compile a program from the source code? That would be the first thing to learn. If not then start with google they can help you a lot. Or I can come up with some easy programs that you can try to compile. Cheers!

Re: Some Modifications...
Reading some of your other post (mainly the "optimized" thread), you may want to look into compiling your own kernel. It's the best place to start if you're wanting to customize a build for your hardware/specific needs. It's also not that hard and doesn't take all that long so you can experiment a bit. I'm sure Ubuntu will allow you to build the kernel as a .deb package too, so you can install it via dpkg just like any other package. Might be worth a look.

Re: Some Modifications...
Alright, so you guys have my attention with compiling my own kernel. I would imagine that it makes quite a bit of difference. I have only ever compiled one program from source (Pcsx2), and that was through using subversion. If it is something along the lines of that, then it'll be easy for me. If not, you may have to talk me through it. I don;t have anything important under this install (I'm dual booting just in case), so I'm willing to experiment and learn.
Wmorri, to answer your first question, I'm really just looking for any general speed increase I can get through tweaks. |
