Ubuntu Auto-Connect after Disconnect
I am running jaunty jackalope desktop version, and am fairly new to linux. The computer running Ubuntu is running as a file server connected to a router (Obviously). The problem is, whenever the router is rebooted or has an error, my Ubuntu Server becomes disconnected and then never reconnects forcing me to have to tell the Ubuntu computer to reconnect. Since no one else here knows how to use linux, nor would I trust them to log on to this computer, the only way to have them reconnect the server to the network is to hold the power button down until it shuts off, and then start it back up so it will autoconnect which is not advisable. Is there any way to have it set up to reconnect after it is disconnected? Thanks.

Re: Ubuntu Auto-Connect after Disconnect
Hi,
OK let me see if we can get you going here. I agree with you that hard reboot isn't the best option. I think that we have a couple of issues but I will focus on the linux box to start with. You say that they router reconnects the box won't reconnect automatically. Are you in the office when this happens? The simplest way to fix that would be to go to the network icon, left click and click on the network card "system eth0" or whatever it may be. That is supposing that you have a gui installed. If you aren't in the office I can look up a command for you to try but I don't know if that will work. Cheers!

Re: Ubuntu Auto-Connect after Disconnect
Hey Thanks Wmorri,
But the problem is just a tad more difficult than that. If I am in the office, I know how to click on it and have it reconnect through the way you have said, which is usually how I do it when I am in the office anyway. When I am out of the office, I do not have the box set up to log into remotely nor do I intend on setting it up that way anytime soon. So the reconnecting would be similar to windows (Sorry I had to say the "W" word ;) ), where if the router goes down, and then comes back up, windows will just automatically reconnect without you having to ask. I would like to setup my linux box to do the same, but do not know how. |

Re: Ubuntu Auto-Connect after Disconnect
Hi,
Saying windows is ok we all have to work with it once and a while. I have a windows computer too, so no problem. I would like to know what the brand and model your router is. Then I can see if there is any problems with it when connected to a linux box. I want to rule out all of these factors first then I will work on your linux box. How often does your router restart too? The router could be the problem as well. Cheers!

Re: Ubuntu Auto-Connect after Disconnect
I am having issues with the router, and had to get a new beta firmware from Netgear to hopefully fix the issue. The router is a FVG318v2. It has been disconnecting 1-3 times a week. I have had it disconnect once since my new firmware install, but I may or may not have been related to the original issue. The real test will be after the weekend, as every monday when I return, it is disconnected. So there is/was an issue with my router, and that one is being worked on at the moment.
The box is plugged into a bridge with 2 other devices (Printer, Windows XP SP3 Box) The bridge is then connected to the router. I have made an update to the linux computer here just today as well as the firmware to the router 4 days ago. I just tried a few seconds ago to unplug the bridge and replug the bridge and the linux box reconnected automatically. I also restarted the router and it kept its connection. So maybe the updates or the firmware might have fixed it. It almost always has a problem over the weekend. So I will watch it this weekend and if it has a problem I will report again. If it does not, than I will mark it as solved. Thank you for your time. |
