I think the hard drive might be dying or there's a problem with one of my IDE cables. Any help as to what's going on and what I can do to cure the illness?

My System

How old is the drive? Most modern hard drives keep information about their health which you can check on either by using the diagnostic tools from the manufacturer or by using the smartmon tools for Linux. Also, running a full scandisk under Windows may discover if there are any physical problems with the drive.

EEK! for now

The hard drive is about four years old or so. I know it's pretty much time to replace both of them. For now I'll leave FC2 alone until I can get another drive, but in the meantime I've installed Apache, MySQL, phpmyadmin on XP and they're all working fine... so to speak.

I can view all the local pages but the only thing is that I can't log in and administer anything when it comes to the websites on the local computer. I can get into phpmyadmin fine as well.

I've tried to turn global variables to on, then restart Apache, but that has no effect. Oh, these tired eyes are getting buggy from hours trying to find a fix on the 'net. The error log in Apache shows nothing relevant. When I try to log into a particular local site the page flashes and remains the same, sans the username and password. All the database information shows up when browsing.

Once again, any suggestions please?
