Some details on the computer to be installed on would perhaps help.

DVD-ROM and DVD-+R/RW drives can act as CD-ROM drives. I've never seen Linux ask for a CD driver before, not even Ubuntu which I've installed before. Can you tell us what type of DVD drive you have? Specifically, who makes it and what model it is (if you have this info). Also, what's the exact message that you get when it asks for the driver?

I remember some distributions have conflicts with some motherboards. I'm on my way to work at this time, and don't have the time at the moment to research. Suggest maybe a different distribution, like Mandrake, or SUSE. I'm afraid Fedora core may have the same issue. You can also browse the release notes on the CD for more information pertaining to known issues.

What make and model of DVDRW do you have? Ubuntu is basically Debian with newer packages whereas Debian is mainly older and more stable packages.
