I would have to say no, linux isn't any slower than the other operating systems out there. It all depends on how you use it, I guess- Windows will run badly when loaded with spyware, and Linux would too if spyware was written for it (but it isn't, so you won't have to worry about that if you try Linux).

As for support on microcontrollers, your best bet here would be to use the "Hardware > other" forum. The site admin is Danrak, you can contact him via the Private Messaging (PM) function of "User CP".
