Ubuntu/firefox

Hello,
I have come across an interesting issue running ubuntu and firefox. I have not been able to consistantly replicate the problem making it all the harder to diagnose. Simply put there are times that I will close firefox and later will go to reopen firefox and I get an error telling me that firefox is already running and I need to close it before being able to start a new session. my questions are a) how do I end a firefox session if there is nothing active on the desktop for firefox b) what might be cause this kind of error in the first place?
Thanks

Re: Ubuntu/firefox

How long did you wait before trying to restart FF? I've seen that same error message several times in Ubuntu and in Vista so I don't think it's a Linux problem...
When it happened in Vista I went into Task Manager and Firefox wasn't there. Sometimes I had to wait several minutes for the error message to go away.

Re: Ubuntu/firefox

my wait time has fluctuated the longest amount of time was somewhere around fifteen minutes. In these situations I have not seen any instances of FF in the system Monitor. thanks

Re: Ubuntu/firefox

I have also had that issue in Ubuntu and could not find firefox running anywhere. It was totally shut down, as far as I could tell. This is the first thread I have ever seen about this issue, I had assumed it was maybe myself missing something. Be interesting to ask on the ubuntu forums.

Re: Ubuntu/firefox

a. To kill firefox, from a terminal run:
Code:
sudo kill -9 $(ps -C firefox -o pid=)
b. Do you have java installed? Try opening firefox and navigating to a page that requires java, then close and restart. Error show? Do the same except avoiding java, then close and restart. Error show? Do that a few times just in case. Post back results.

Re: Ubuntu/firefox

Thanks for those tips. I'll have to try those out. I'm not sure if I have java installed or not, I'll have to check that when I get home.
