Re: Can't boot vista after installing linux
I had the same problem, except I was able to boot and then that occurred. I easily resolved the problem by editing the boot menu item for windows through all the different partitions (was on 0, needed to be set to 1) I expected it to be 0, but I think it needed to actually be set to linux partition . I'm very new so don't take anything I say hree for fact, except that by trying the partition I didn't think would work, I fixed my problem.
Now I still have to figure out how to permanently edit the boot menu, so I don't have to do it every time. I hope this helps you. |

Re: Can't boot vista after installing linux
Can you be more specific about how you have both OSes installed? Are they side by side on a single hard drive? Multiple hard drives?
Would you also open a terminal (or konsole on KDE) and run the following commands: Code:
sudo fdisk -l <-- that's a lowercase L cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

Re: Can't boot vista after installing linux
If grub was installed to the MBR of the first disk (the default) then all is well. Boot linux. su to root. cd /boot/grub, vi grub.conf, edit windows entry to match the partition where Windows lives.
Or, during boot, use the arrow keys to select Windows and hit "e". edit the line with hd0,0 to match the actual location of Windows. Normally this will be hd0,0 but it maybe different so you can change it here. after changing type, "b" to boot. Bill |

Re: Can't boot vista after installing linux
Thanks for the help. Sorry, I should have posted here: problem solved.
I had installed another version of GRUB in my GRUB boot. I think this is where the problem occurred. Anyhow, I somehow screwed something up (yay!, I'm good at that!). I do not yet understand linux boot, however it seemed to point to my vista "active partition" before linux install where the boot loader was. ?My solution was to reconfigure the boot back to partition 1, whicj wasw where Iinstalled linux. Although i do not understand the logic of linus's bootloader, I can use my system , so as of now I am contemt. I would like to understand further, but it's nota worth while battle i think. I will get a little HASH down, the laugh at the bootloader (hopefully). |
