kde fails to connect to X server Debian PPC

I got Debian PPC with KDE cd and installed it on my G4. It rebooted, loads, and ends with me at a command prompt. Okay, I log in and then type kdm, and nothing happens, I just get a new prompt. I type startkde, and get this on the screen:
Quote:
xsetroot: unable to open display ' '
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ' '
startkde: Starting up...
startkde: Running kpersonalizer...
kwin: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
the last line being repeated until I hit control-z. What do I do next to fix it??

Re: kde fails to connect to X server Debian PPC

Hi,

You might try typing:
Code:
startx
that is normally how you start the x server. If that doesn't work just post the error that you receive.

Cheers!

Here is a "screen shot" of the error I get when I type startx.

Re: kde fails to connect to X server Debian PPC

After you've logged in and before running 'startx', run the following command:
Code:
echo "exec startkde" >> ~/.xinitrc
You won't get feedback, but the 'exec startkde' line will be added to Xserver's startup file. You can then run 'startx' and KDE should load.

#EDIT: If KDM is installed on your box; you should also be able to run:
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm
That should configure kdm for you, giving you a graphical login instead of the text based one you're using now; and should also auto-load x/kde for you.

Sinclair, I can't see the attachment. I don't have admin privileges.

Do what rome says it should work for you.

Hmm, you shouldn't need admin to see it. Looks like I'll have to let Horse and jason know.

Try this:

Re: kde fails to connect to X server Debian PPC

Nope, no good. It is already trying to start kdm, and when I type startx, the screen flashes like it's trying something, but it always bails with the same error, as seen in my screenshot above.

Re: kde fails to connect to X server Debian PPC

Sorry, should have checked back or waited until the screenshot was working. Seems to be an xorg issue, not KDE (at least for now).

If you would post the output of (or snap shots) of the following commands; that would be helpful:
Code:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# specifically the "Driver" section

grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

grep WW /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Also, what video card are you using?

Re: kde fails to connect to X server Debian PPC

Screen with all three commands in the order you asked.

My video card is a BFG 6800GS OC flashed with a modified Apple 6800GT ROM so as to work in the Mac OS.

Re: kde fails to connect to X server Debian PPC

Totally spaced this thread.. sorry.

If you would again login and then run the following:
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
This should walk you through setting up your xserver configuration. After it's complete, try running 'startx' once more. If it doesn't work, at least the new config should give you more to work with and we can go from there.

Re: kde fails to connect to X server Debian PPC

I got an error because "Package 'xserver-xfree86' is not installed". Is that part of KDE?
