yaboot loader failed on PPC Debian install

Okay, this is my Mac, only I have upped the CPU to 1.47Ghz (see my system to the left for full stats. On a whim I downloaded Debian with KDE CD disk 1 installer. My Mac booted it, and I plugged a 60gig hard drive into the USB and it installed, but failed on the boot loader. I can't use the internal drives, as it's a software raid, hence I was hoping to use a USB drive that I'd plug in when I felt like messing with linux. Can I even do this, and if so, what do I need to do to do it? Or is it a better idea to put the hard disk inside the Mac (I do have a free IDE channel and drive spot to install it if need be.).

Re: yaboot loader failed on PPC Debian install

Hi,

Nice to see you coming over here. I should stop by and see you sometime. I think that if you can stick your hdd in your computer that it would be best. USB can have some problems, as you can tell, and you need to change the timing on some stuff. So stick your hdd in your computer if it isn't too much trouble and then see if you are able to boot. If you still aren't able to boot then we can go from there.

Cheers!

I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend. I'll post back and tell you how it went.

Re: yaboot loader failed on PPC Debian install

Okay, put the hard drive on the internal IDE bus, and install went okay. It rebooted, loads, and ends with me at a command prompt. KDE isn't starting, but I have a new thread for that one. But I do have a question now. I can keep rebooting this thing, and it keeps going to linux, I never get an option to go back to OS X. I have to hold down the option key to get the hardware to list all the OSes it sees, and then select OS X from there. And if I want to go back to linux, I have to do the same thing, as it doesn't show up in Startup Disk, as OS X can't even read the hard drive. Is that something I have to edit in yaboot?

Re: yaboot loader failed on PPC Debian install

Hi,

That is normal. The same thing happens with GRUB. You will just have to keep doing what you are doing by hitting the keystroke to switch to OS X. We will change this so that yaboot starts OS X first. What you will have to do is change the config file for yaboot. I found where the yaboot config file is you will need to go to /etc/yaboot.conf. I am glad that you were able to get it installed. Now it is just the little details to fix. However lets work on your problem with the X-Windows Server first then we can work on yaboot.

Cheers!
