Need help with red hat 9 installation!!!

yo! I am new to the world of linux, and i got the red hat 9 for dummies. I tried to install it on my dell inspiron 5000e, but ran out of storage space. I then tried to install it on my old win98 desktop, but it wouldn't load the installation thing (anaconda) after the reboot. I fulfilled all the system requirements, and the CD drive can read the disk. can anyone help?

Re: Need help with red hat 9 installation!!!

Support for Red Hat 9 was dropped officially in 2004, I believe. RH is now RHEL. Point being, that version is outdated and should not be used. You'll just run into trouble. Take a look at Fedora, which is free, supported, and based on RHEL.

I agree with Rome on that one. If you need any help with fedora just give me a shout and I can help you with whatever you need.

Cheers!

Re: Need help with red hat 9 installation!!!

I am in middle school, and only wanted it as a homework computer, so i dont need internet or anything fancy. Besides, i tried to make a live CD and was totaly confused by the whole; standard or bit torrent, run or save, ISO images, and all that junk. So, the for dummies book was so much easier. Could anyone tell me how to make a live CD? it would be great.
thanks so much!

Re: Need help with red hat 9 installation!!!

Choose the 'download now' option if you're on Fedora's page (otherwise choose the standard download - not bit torrent) and save the file, don't just run it. Go for the 'live CD' since it's smaller in size (600MB give or take), and will download quicker. You'll still want a decent connection (download speed) and be able to leave the pc running for an hour + depending on speed.

Once the file is complete, you can follow this detailed guide on validating and burning the iso. If you have any questions, just ask.

Re: Need help with red hat 9 installation!!!

You can use Red Hat 9, but you won't get support or any updates for any of the software. So, you can use it if you want but, that is up to you. If you get Fedora you will get all the updates and security fixes. I do know that Fedora 11 will be coming out in like 5 weeks so if you can wait that long you might be better off.

Cheers!

Re: Need help with red hat 9 installation!!!

What actually happens when the RH9 cd is in the tray and you boot the pc? Are you taken directly to Windows? Do you see any text (the kernel loading - should show output on the screen as it loads)? Any errors?

Re: Need help with red hat 9 installation!!!

this is off the top of my head; i restart the computer w/ RH9 in the drive, win98 boots normally. i go under my computer, the CD drive (which reconises the CD), and click the CD. i go through a file and find a DOS file, i open it and it says i have win95 and i need more memory. if you need the exact procces, i can give it. TY!!!

Re: Need help with red hat 9 installation!!!

Hi,

When you start you computer. Before it beeps and finishes POST does it show you how to access your bootloader or bios? It might be a key like ESC, Enter or F1 - F10. You will need to hit one of those keys, then choose your CD or DVD drive to boot from. That should start the cd and allow you to load RH9.

Cheers!
