Ubuntu 64-bit: Ubiquity not Working from Live CD
Hi
I recently got an HP Elitebook 8530w and I want to install Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit on it. The problem is that when I try and run the installer from the desktop nothing happens. I try uibiquity from a terminal and get the following error: error: dbus_bus_get: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoSocket: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus: socket: Connection refused Just as the Live CD desktop loads it displays: "Internal Error: Failed to Initialize HAL". Ubuntu is my primary OS, so this is a real pain. Thanks |

Re: Ubuntu 64-bit: Ubiquity not Working from Live CD
First eliminate the possibility that it's the cd itself. Check the ISO's md5sum (usually not the problem), and burn the cd at a very low speed (4x at least). If that's not it, try using the alternative cd found here. If the alternative cd fails or if you complete the install and encounter and error, post back and we can go from there.

Re: Ubuntu 64-bit: Ubiquity not Working from Live CD
It's an Intel Core 2 duo. The alternative cd worked, thanks. It installed fine, but now when I boot up and the desktop loads I still get a "Failed to initialize HAL" error and the network does not work.
When I run network-admin I get a similar error when I ran ubiquity from the terminal: can't connect to the system bus. |

Re: Ubuntu 64-bit: Ubiquity not Working from Live CD
1. Do you have any USB devices connected during boot?
2. Please post the output of the following commands: Code:
dmesg | tail lspci <-- the l is a lowercase L Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/hal stop sudo /etc/init.d/hal start

lspci ![]() I cannot connect to the internet or use a USB device, so I had to take a photo. Let me know if you can read anything, I'll try and repost a better pic. Finally, restarting hal failed. It takes forever and there is no [ok] at the end :( |

Re: Ubuntu 64-bit: Ubiquity not Working from Live CD
lspci isn't crucial; just helpful to see exactly what you're running. The mouse shouldn't cause problems, but other USB devices plugged in at boot can -- at least with Ubuntu. That would be the simple problem, anyway.
If you would post the output of the following commands; it shouldn't be near as long as lspci: Code:
sudo /usr/sbin/hald --verbose=yes --daemon=no ps axwwww | grep dbus
