[SOLVED] Fresh install: No sound.
I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 8.10 into my computer. It's my main OS (only OS actually) and my problem is that there's 0% sound from speakers. Tested in both Firefox and OS itself. I assure you this isn't a Firefox problem, it's probably a driver related/preferences related problem.
I had Ubuntu 8.10 before, but because of some problems with dual-booting, I had to unistall Ubuntu 8.10. When I previously had it I had the same sound problem, so I'm almost positive it's a driver related issue. Where can I get sound drivers? Computer Specs: OS: Ubuntu 8.10 Comp: Acer Aspire 6920 Previous OS(s): Vista, Win7 Sound Card: Not sure. I'll add this later. ;Dolby Home Theater Sound worked in Vista & Win7, By the way. Any help is greatly appreciated! |

Usage: lspci [<switches>]

Also, I have some realtek dolby surround sound card thing, not sure. how do i find out? there's a setting for realtek under linux. i change it to alsa. |

How far along did you follow in that guide? Did you actually setup OSS or just blacklist alsa modules?

Yes, I was that far along. I stopped when it asked me to Install OSS. I tried, but the files failed. Apparently. they're not available anymore :(

Not sure why it's blank. It should have been gksudo instead of sudo, but obviously that wasn't the issue. You may want to 'cd /etc/modprobe.d' then 'ls' to see if the file exist. Then 'gksudo gedit blacklist'
However; the modules seem to be loaded. Did you reboot after editing the blacklist? Also, did you 'dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base'? ALSA recognizes the card = good. Real quick, run: Code:

Well, I know for sure you sound card will work. Unless, Arch linux is just 'special.' I'm running the same card. Only difference is I don't use pulseaudio which comes out of the box with Ubuntu.
So, if you would... go to System > Preferences > Sound and set each to Alsa where available. Then open a terminal and run the following: Code:
sudo killall pulseaudio sudo alsa force-reload #NOTE: gimp can convert .png's to jpg

No problem. Glad it worked out.
I would; however, double check for the blacklist file. You might have removed it, not sure, but if it remains, it will block alsa modules from loading = no sound. You may also think about removing pulseaudio for good.

gksudo gedit blacklist If the system is set to Alsa, it shouldn't revert back. It may not be required that you remove it completely. However; here's a good how to on how to remove it. #NOTE: you can skip the bit about Gnome Preferences, if you've already switched everything to ALSA
