What is your problem? Do you hate Linux or is it some thing else?

Re: Linux Cant log In(Novice)
OK let me start over again, I rebuilt an old desktop PC upgraded Mother board,PCI express, core 2 CPU, DDR2 memory, new320gig HDD, Nvida gamers graghics card. So I decided to give Linux A try On the fresh hard drive. I have always used windows based OS 95 on up to Vista on this machine. I ran the linux(freespire) from the CD first to see if I would like it and it seemed interesting, as I have all kinds of time on my hands(blue my knee out snow boarding with grandson, bad move for an old man,48)Then I go back and Install OS following all the way to shutting down to reboot. Now I power back up it gets all the way to the log in screen no problems, type in user name and password and I keep getting log in failed. Now I wrote the password down rite on the CD cover, so then after getting totaly frustrated and trying all kinds of combos, Thinking I screwed up, I still could not get in and thats where I stand with that Hard drive(Oh ya,I pulled it, put in an older 120gig loaded vista)Now after cooling off over night I am going to figure this out or take a hammer to it,Hhehehee lol, So Iam sorry if I came across wrong in the other posts. Now I surfed yesterday till my head was ready to pop. I never was one for DOS so command lines and that stuff is all new to me(thats the frustation part)Any Help would be gladly appreceated!!!!!!!!!

Re: Linux Cant log In(Novice)
caps lock on? I'm glad you clarified that whole Ubuntu Freespire thing, too. Because they're different.
If you can't log in with the credentials you supplied during the install then you're typing something wrong. Maybe you thought you input: cool587Rjh3H as your password but you're typing cool587Rjh3h in now. |

Re: Linux Cant log In(Novice)
Listen -- I have no idea about Freespire. The following is what works on Debian so maybe if someone else knows the utility for freespire and can chime in, that would be cool. Maybe it's the same, I dunno. Freespire is based upon ubuntu, right? Ubuntu is based upon Debian so this should work fine.
Boot into single user mode (you probably have 2 kernel selections upon booting, one is single-user mode. Usually it's below the regular boot kernel.) Choose it. Input the root credentials when prompted and then you'll be able to reset the password for the user or just make another user. Debian has the passwd utility so it's trivial to do this. From the command line (where you're at) issue the following: # passwd uname <enter> (that pound sign is the prompt - don't type it) input the new password <enter> do it again <enter> Exit from root to continue booting and log in with your new password. If this doesn't work, it's the uname that's fubar'd and not the password. Lemme know. EDIT lol, I just really read your response. Sounds like Freespire makes it graphical, too. Same thing as I just wrote to do ;) |

Re: Linux Cant log In(Novice)
OK On the command line it starts with Root@(the PCs name)#I type in passwd uname and I get unkown user name, but if I just type passwd and enter I get enter newUNIX password#, but I can not type anything In from there.Iam confused about the single user mode at boot. I got here through the diagnostis selection at boot, I did not see anything thats says single user mode. The hole screen is only there a few seconds and if you do not go down or up it goes rite to the login screen???????/

Re: Linux Cant log In(Novice)
I'm sorry. Someone more familiar with Freespire will have to help.
Sounds like they've got passwd mod'd a bit. And just for clarity, if you're at the root prompt and you run passwd without arguments, you've changed the root password. Maybe you can run passwd --help. If you look at the image I included you'll see: Usage: passwd [options] [LOGIN] under my prompt. It's letting you know how to run passwd. You issue the program, passwd, then any options like: -d (to delete the password, say) of the Code:
[login] If passwd is issued without a login (username) argument then you'll be changing the password to whomever's account you are currently logged into. However, you wrote that you went into a Freespire utility in order to accomplish this task and that there was a passwd utility. Perhaps there is a setting or a dropdown allowing you to choose which user's password you wish to change. All I've done is serve to cunfuse the issue, it seems. All apologies. If you can do this the Freespire way, with said utility, then that's how you should do this. Maybe another Freespire user can help out.

Re: Linux Cant log In(Novice)
The 'diagnostics' option in GRUB probably boots you into runlevel 3, not 1. If you're being asked for a root password, that's your first clue. To use single user, you need to edit the kernel line of the Freespire v2.0.8 option in GRUB, and include a '1' to the end. Reset the root password and user password, if you can't login to either.

Re: Linux Cant log In(Novice)
The above is true, but my lack of reading means it's not really important. The fact that you're getting the error with your username means you're either entering the wrong username or your user was never created. Not all Linux distros create a user account during install, but you will setup root password. Don't mix the two, user and root, as they're very different.
At the prompt ( root@....#) run the following: Code:
cat /etc/passwd | grep "/home" | cut -d: -f1 If there's not output, post back, as you'll need to create a new user.

Re: Linux Cant log In(Novice)
Update I see alot of posts on forums, and not just this one about dialup modems and problems, I have come to realize older hardware installs without a problem on Linux based OS systems> My example is I took an old 56k v92 zoom out of an old windows 95 400 mhz and worked with no problem
