Don't jump drives require some sort of drivers, even if they are generic? It just seems like it would be hard to boot for a device the computer won't recognize until the OS is up and running...maybe I'm wrong.

I've never used such, but it would seem the issue is getting the computer bios to boot from the device. It may help to know something about the computer in question. And isn't the device a USB device? (forgive me for not knowing). If so it could be as simple as setting the bios to boot from the USB device, if the bios has that capability, much like booting from a network device.

Basically what batty said. As long as the computer is able to boot from a USB device, and you installed the image to the USB memory device, you should be fine. However, not all computer can boot from USB. Any newer computer should. How new? I don't know. Since USB Hard Drives are becoming more and more common place, the ability to boot from such devices will become more and more popular.
Also, I too was a bit confused at first when you said "DSL". I was thinking of the internet connection. I actually had to read your first post 3 times before I knew what you were referring to.

I found this in case it helps. If you'd rather use DSL, perhaps there's some ideas you can use to fix your problem. http://featherlinux.berlios.de/

Thanks guys I got it working now, though I still prefer to boot it off of a CD for recovery work. I was just interested in seeing it work off my thumby. I was using winimage wrong so it didn't write the write files to the disk.
